A Handmade Wedding Weekend in Atlanta

A Handmade Wedding Weekend in Atlanta

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to experience a personal tour of the indie-pendent, a fabulous little boutique in Virginia Highlands. If you aren't careful when you are shopping in the Highlands, you might just miss this hidden gem!  The exposed brick walls and spiral staircase that are found in this charming "handcrafted" store are tucked away in an eclectic and totally awesome space that is accessed only through an alley off of St. Charles Avenue... just behind Belly and across from Neighbors. The indie-pendent offers high quality, handmade home decor, accessories and special occasion gifts. It is also a great venue for smaller wedding related events... ask them if they will rent it!

All of the photos in this article were taken last year by Amber Wilburn Photography {also possibly an Atlanta wedding photographer according to her web site} at the Wedding Day Hooray event.

And this weekend, the indie-pendent is hosting a Handmade Wedding Weekend!  Workshops, demos and  trunk shows are just the beginning of the weekend's festivities.

Holiday and Winter Wonderland Themed Wedding Table Designs

12/17/2009 4:31:40 PM ~

Holiday and Winter Wonderland Themed Wedding Table Centerpiece

Last week AtlantaBridal co-hosted a holiday luncheon for Atlanta wedding professionals with our friends at Perfect Wedding Guide Atlanta. The event was held in the ballroom of the gorgeous Atlanta History Center, one of our preferred Atlanta wedding venues located in Buckhead.

The theme for this holiday gathering was "Winter Wonderland" so I thought this would be a great event to feature right now. If you are planning a last minute holiday wedding or event, or maybe a holiday wedding in 2010, I hope you can get some ideas!

To create the Winter Wonderland theme, the planning team chose simple white table linens. My friends and preferred Atlanta wedding florists, Christine and Bob, at Perfect Petals designed several holiday and winter wonderland themed table centerpieces made up of ornaments, jewels and branches painted silver. Although you will often see the same centerpiece on each table at a wedding, I love it when the tables have a variety of centerpieces like this. Perfect Petals really came through on this for us since we almost doubled the guest list for the event at the last minute.

To complete the tables, my friend and Preferred Atlanta wedding invitation designer, Teras at T.evenire, created the beautiful table number cards and menu cards that you see below. Teras also pulled through for us at the last minute when we asked her to create a ton of extra menu cards and table cards at the last minute. Thanks so much Teras!

The photos above was submitted by Patterson Photography. Thanks again to PWG, Atlanta History Center, Bold American Catering, Perfect Petals, T.evenire, Patterson Photography, Nikki Pappas and everyone who attended this event and donated toys for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. You all rock! Happy Holidays!

Should I Hire You? What to Consider when Hiring a Wedding Florist

5/19/2008 9:18:31 AM ~ Kimberly Liles, Floral Festivities

image copyright Floral Festivities

Your wedding day will be one of the most important days of your life. You will have pictures of that day to show your family, friends, coworkers, and anyone who stops by and sees that album sitting on the coffee table! Your wedding flowers will be in almost all of the photographs so it is extrememly important that you pick the right person for the job. How do you know who you should hire to design your wedding flowers? Read this article for tips to keep in mind...

5 Incredible Ways to SAVE Money on Your Wedding Flowers!!!

3/18/2008 8:28:06 PM ~ Kimberly Liles, Floral Festivities

When planning a wedding, I think all of us get a little surprised at how much everything costs. We are shocked and say, "Wow! I had no idea it was going to cost this much!!!" We may do our best to come up with what we think is a "reasonable budget," but soon start finding ourselves giving in and spending a little extra here and there.

As a wedding florist, I realize that, for many brides, choosing the wedding flowers will be one of the last things on their "Wedding To-Do-List." By the time you get to the flowers, you've blown your budget on the venue, the food, and maybe even your absolutely, must have, wedding gown!

I'm here to help! Here are a few tips to discuss with your wedding florist to make your wedding flower dollars go a little further.

1. Bridal Bouquet: Choose a hand tied design. The labor for constructing a hand-tied bouquet is less time consuming than those designed in bouquet holders such as cascading, tear drop, or crescent bouquets.

2. Bridesmaid Bouquets: A collection of blooms in a single variety should lessen your cost. Some popular bridesmaid bouquets are the gerbera daisies, roses, or calla lilies. A single, long stem calla lily is both an inexpensive and elegant choice for your bridesmaids as well.

3. Altar/Ceremony Flowers: To save money, plan to use flowers for your ceremony that can also be used at your reception. A great example would be to move your two large column or pedestal arrangements to the reception to place on your buffet table.

4. Reception Flowers: Consider placing your bridesmaid bouquets in vases to accent your reception décor. If you have three bridesmaids, for example, you could place one bouquet on the gift table, another on the guest book table, and the other on the DJ table. Or, consider decorating your cake table with all of your bridesmaid bouquets. Just laying them around the base of your cake will add a beautiful accent to your cake.

5. Wedding Flowers Overall: Choose flowers for your entire wedding décor that are in season year round. You may love roses, callas, and orchids—who wouldn’t? They’re beautiful! Use them for your bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages. However, consider using less expensive blooms around your altar and at your reception. From a distance, your guests will really only notice the color scheme you have chosen. They will not be focused on each individual flower in your arch arrangement. When your guests first enter the reception, they will focus on the overall feeling of the room including the flowers as well as the lighting, your cake, even the smell of the food! Mainly, though, they will just want to celebrate this wonderful event with you!

Three Alternatives to the Traditional Bouquet Toss

2/12/2008 2:31:10 PM ~ Kimberly Liles, Floral Festivities

Occasionally when I meet with brides, they are weary of keeping with tradition and having a toss bouquet. Many brides are wanting to drop this custom for several reasons. Couples are getting married later in life and brides don't want to add any pressure to some friends who may not be walking down the aisle any time soon. Others dislike the implication that they are chomping at the bit to settle down. Here are some alternatives that may make everyone happy:

Wish Come True Toss Bouquet: Invite all the ladies at your reception to participate - married or singe. Ask them all to make a wish right when the bouquet is tossed and the lucky lady who catches the bouquet will get their wish.

Fortune Bouquet Toss: Invite all ladies onto the dance floor for this toss. Have a bouquet made of of mini bouquet consisting of only a few flowers each. Held in your hand it looks like one bouquet. On each bouquet, tie a string with a fortune on it and have the bouquets adorned with ribbons. At the toss, all bouquets fly in the air and several lucky ladies will get a bouquet of their own and a little bit of their future foretold!

Longest Married Bouquet Toss: Invite all married couples onto the dance floor and have your DJ began playing a song of your choice. Ask your DJ to begin eliminating couples who have been married the least amount of time (one year, then three years, five, ten, and so on.) The last couple dancing receives the bouquet.

Your DJ can announce any unusual bouquet tosses and give the necessary instructions. If you're not fond of the traditional toss, give one of these fun alternatives a try.

How Much Should I Spend On My Wedding Flowers?

1/31/2008 10:27:43 PM ~ Kimberly Liles, Floral Festivities

Knowing how much to spend on your wedding flowers can be overwhelming.  Many people rarely purchase flowers, and when they do, they rarely need more than one or two arrangements at a time.  How do you know where to start when considering your bridal party flowers, ceremony flowers, and flowers for the reception?  I recommend you start with your overall budget for the entire wedding.
Most studies suggest that you should spend plan on spending anywhere from 10% - 15% of your total wedding budget on the flowers. Quick math would suggest then that if your overall wedding is costing $20,000, then you should budget anywhere from $2000 - $3000 on your flowers.

This may seem like a lot of money to spend on flowers since they won't last forever, but keep a few things in mind:

1. Your wedding flowers are in almost every photograph taken and pictures do last forever.

2. The flowers are typically what your guests will see first. As your guests enter your ceremony, they will be greeted by the floral decor you have chosen. This first impression will be long remembered!

3. The color, fragrance, size, shape and visual joy of flowers all play a major role in creating the enchanting setting you are dreaming of for your big day whether it be romantic, magical, sensual, contemporary or traditional.

4. The flowers you choose should reflect your own distinctive style and personality. Have fun with it! Are you bold and daring? Use flowers in vibrant, non-traditional colors. Are you elegant and sophisticated? State it simply with a beautiful presentation of calla liles or orchids. Are you whimsical and fun to be around? Try flowers that give the feeling you just gathered them from the garden. Are you sheek and edgy? Contemporary designs might just be your thing. Whatever your style, you can say it with flowers!

5. Just as the flowers will be the first impression of your wedding they will also be the last. Have a beautifully decorated reception that will stay with your guests. Remember, most of their time will be spent there celebrating with you!
Before consulting with a wedding florist, it is always a good idea to know what flowers you will need on your wedding day.  Consider the bridal party flowers including your bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, corsages for mothers, grandmothers, vocalists, readers, etc., and boutonnieres for the groom, groomsmen, ushers, ring bearer, fathers, grandfathers, etc.
Although you may not know exactly what flowers you will need for your ceremony, it is a great idea to bring pictures with you of your venue so that your wedding florist can suggest many ideas of how you can beautifully decorate your place of choice.  If you do not have any pictures of your own, check out their website and see if they already have pictures posted for your florist to see during your meeting.
Lastly, consider how many guests you anticipate coming to your reception and how many tables you will need decorated.  Your table decor is limited only by your imagination and the imagination of your designer.
By having this information with you, you will better be able to discuss your wedding flower budget with your florist.  Knowing a budget helps your wedding florist to suggest not only flowers, but also designs and styles of arrangements that will best meet your needs.

Saving Money on your Wedding Flowers

1/1/2008 8:25:31 PM ~ Stems

As a florist, the biggest question I hear is, "My budget is limited...how do I save money on my wedding florals?"

Here are three key areas to get the most bang for your buck:

1. Know your budget before you meet with a florist.  Knowing your wedding budget will help the you and the florist to determine what flowers will work best for you.  Keep in mind that you may acheive the same look of a high priced bouquet by using similar flowers for just a fraction of the cost.

2. Choose flowers that are in season. Seasonal flowers will always be easier to obtain and thus, be less expensive.

3. Think about places you can double the use of your flowers. For example, you may be able to use a ceremony aisle arrangment on your buffet table at your reception.

Timeless Sophistication Wedding Table DecorWhite is synonymous with wedding.  Here we have infused the classic wedding tones of white and ivory with the richness of gold.  We anchor our table with decadent linens of cream, delicately embellished with threads of gold.  We layer the table top with translucent chargers patterned with golden points, rich golden napkins and fine scripted menus.  The golden chairs sparkle white; the abundance of candles cast a warm glow.   A magnificent array of exotic orchids and creamy tulips complete the table scape.  Our palate of muted, warm tones calls to mind the elegance of an era passed, a timeless sophistication.
