The Athens area offers a wide variety of outstanding ceremony and wedding reception sites. From cozy dinners at quaint bed and breakfasts, an outdoor ceremony on the University of Georgia Campus or a large wedding reception in ballrooms for up to 3,000 people, this list has everything you need to find the place that is perfect for you and your event whether it's a wedding reception, engagement party, rehearsal dinner or the ceremony. Historic Venues

Located on a 4-acre county estate, the Carl House is an antebellum-style home with lush gardens and an elegant ballroom. Carl House can accommodate your rehearsal dinner, bridal luncheon, ceremony, reception, fireside brunch or photo shoot. Carl House is located just outside of Gwinnett County, near the Mall of GA and 30 minutes from Athens.

The Historic Georgian Hotel, maintained by Trumps Catering, is located in the heart of downtown Athens. Built in 1908, the Georgian, once a premiere hotel in Athens, was renovated in 1985 and is proudly on the Historic Register of Georgia.

Featuring five different ballrooms, the Georgian can accommodate parties of many sizes ranging from intimate seated events of 38 people to large standing events of 225 guests.

The Taylor Grady House was built in the Greek revival style in the 1840's. Owned and operated by the Junior League of Athens, the Taylor-Grady House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The house is available for rent for 10-hour time blocks Monday-Sunday and is a lovely location for weddings, receptions, and rehearsal dinners. The Taylor-Grady House can hold up to 550 guests for combined outdoors and indoors events. 200 guests can be seated in the house for events. Located in Commerce, Georgia, the Governor Hardman House is a two-story brick Mediterranean style mansion that features many fascinating architectural details like windows and doors with their original beveled glass. The mansion, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, has only recently been opened for private weddings and special events. 65 people can be hosted for an indoor-seated event; while up to 300 guests can be accommodated for a standing indoor-outdoor event. The Fair Havens Estate is designed to elegantly host both indoors and outdoors events. From intimate dinner parties to elaborate weddings, it's spacious rooms, with 11 1/2 foot ceilings and pocket doors, reflect the splendor of a bygone era. Fair Havens can accommodate up to 75 guests for indoor weddings, and approximately 300 guests for out-door weddings, with plenty of room for banquet tents.

Bed and Breakfasts

The Ashford Manor Bed & Breakfast, located in Watkinsville, has been in the same family for over 100 years. Completely surrounded and secluded by a border of magnolias, red buds and pines, the 1893 Victorian manor house, cottage, gazebo and four acres of landscaped gardens all terrace down to a pool and open woods and creek beyond. The Manor can comfortably accommodate 300 guests for indoor and outdoor receptions and events. Built in 1912 by cotton broker James M. Rogers, Magnolia Terrace Guest House was completely restored in 1994. The eight unique guest rooms are beautifully appointed with antiques, ceiling fans and large, private baths. The House can hold up to 200 guests for a standing event and 90 for a seated dinner. The Nicholson House bed and breakfast is a magnificently restored antebellum house adorned with Civil War artifacts that offers eight luxurious guest rooms, a period decorated dining room, and 34 acres with majestic forests, a secluded lake, and vast rolling fields. Although the Nicholson House will only host large parties outdoors underneath a tent, there are several beautiful dining rooms perfect for meetings and intimate dinners. Restaurants

The Georgia Museum of Art can provide a delightful setting for parties, meetings, or office or social functions. Wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners can be held in the Museum Café surrounded by great works of art creating an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere for any event. The Lyndon House Arts Center is located in downtown Athens at the North end of Jackson Street. Built circa 1850 by the first Mayor of Athens, Dr. Edward R. Ware, the Ware-Lyndon House still crowns a high ridge at the north end of Jackson Street, surveying the downtown landscape. The house is the only structure still remaining from the once-prominent "Lickskillet" neighborhood made up of antebellum homes. The house itself is a two-story brick house representing a blend of the Greek revival and Italianate styles. The Ware-Lyndon House is a locally and nationally designated landmark. The Founder's Garden is located on lush North Campus at the University of Georgia. Built by the Garden Club of Georgia, the Founder's Garden is a testament to nature's simple grandeur. The Garden and House can both be reserved for your special occasion. An indoor and garden event can accommodate up to 150 people. The Founder's Garden also offers a tent available for rental. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia

The Conservatory is located in the heart of the Visitor Center surrounded by beautiful flora and a glass ceiling that gives stunning views of evening sunsets. The Conservatory is large enough to comfortably hold 200-seated guests and 300 people for a standing room event. The Conservatory also offers several classrooms for any corporate or educational event. Perfect for both ceremony and reception, the Conservatory is ideal for the bride who wants her wedding to have all the beauty nature offers without the hassles of an outdoor wedding.

The Callaway Building was the first permanent building constructed at the Garden and contains offices, teaching, and research facilities on the lower level. Meeting and conference facilities on the upper level include a 105-seat auditorium, reception area, and conference room. The Callaway Building is an excellent location for small business meetings and retreats.

Situated in a secluded hardwood forest, the Day Chapel is a beautiful and private location that offers a gorgeous chapel for the ceremony of your dreams, offering stunning carved mahogany and glass doors, which incorporate the state bird, state butterfly, state flower, and state tree into interior design motifs. The Chapel and the Reception Hall can both accommodate up to 130 guests. The Day Chapel has a fully equipped catering kitchen. The reception hall located on the lower level opens onto a beautiful garden terrace overlooking a steep woodland ravine creating a serene atmosphere for any wedding reception.

The Terrace Room is a large and beautifully decorated banquet room located on the lower level of the Garden Club Headquarters. The lower level also contains restrooms and a catering kitchen and opens onto an expansive brick terrace overlooking a wooded area and landscaped garden. The lower level accommodates approximately 140 people for seated dinners and slightly larger numbers for lectures, receptions, and exhibitions.

Chapels

The Seney-Stovall Chapel was built in 1882 as the chapel for the Lucy Cobb Institute, a boarding school for girls that opened in 1859, and for community cultural events. Sitting at the edge of the Lucy Cobb grounds on North Milledge Avenue, this unusual octagonal building with an exquisite Victorian interior has been restored in a way that allows for its use by a wide variety of university and community groups for plays, concerts, lectures, weddings, meetings and other special events. The Spalding Theater, which seats 240, and the Conference/Green Room, which seats 45, are rented to the public. No food or drinks are allowed. For rental information call (706) 542-6583.

Situated in the heart of UGA's Old North Campus, the University Chapel is a well-known campus landmark. The Chapel is still in great demand today as a venue for lectures, campus meetings, and wedding ceremonies. One unique feature of the Chapel is that it houses one of the world's largest framed oil paintings, "Interior of St. Peter's Rome," painted by George Cooke. The staff of UGA's Office of Performing Arts manages the Chapel facility and its calendar of events. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is not a typical conference center. Unlike many hotels and conference centers, it offers comprehensive services as only a university-affiliated continuing education center can do.
